Chimney Cap Installation

December 1, 2025 Main Road
Problem

Top masonry crown and surrounding mortar were severely deteriorated with crumbling material and a partially exposed clay flue tile, and the chimney lacked a proper cap/spark arrestor. Inside the firebox throat and flue floor there was soot staining and residue from recent use, indicating the chimney had not been recently cleaned or sealed.

Solution

We removed loose debris, rebuilt and repaired the concrete crown, and repointed the top masonry. A custom-fabricated black pyramid-style metal cap with mesh spark arrestor was installed, fastened and sealed at the base flashing with roofing cement; the flue and firebox were brushed, coated with a heat-resistant sealant, and interior components were left secured in place.

Chimney crown and masonry are rebuilt, the new cap and spark arrestor are secure and sealed, and the flue/firebox are cleaned and sealed to reduce soot migration and water intrusion. The system is now safer, watertight, and better protected against sparks and animal entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Barco

What's the typical cost for a chimney sweep in Barco, NC, and does our coastal weather affect the price or how often I need a cleaning? LOCAL

+

That's a great question we hear often in the Currituck area. For a standard chimney sweeping, which includes a Level 1 safety inspection, homeowners in Barco can typically expect to pay between $175 and $275. The price can vary based on the chimney's height and accessibility. Now, regarding our coastal weather – it plays a significant role in your chimney's health. The humid, salty air can accelerate the corrosion of metal components like your chimney cap and flashing. The driving rain from a nor'easter can also test the integrity of your masonry and mortar joints. While this doesn't necessarily increase the cost of a standard sweep, it makes the annual inspection component absolutely critical. Catching moisture damage or rust early can save you from major, costly repairs. So, even with our milder North Carolina winters, the unique coastal climate makes a yearly check-up a wise investment for safety and preventing long-term damage.

Living here in Barco, with the damp, salty air from the coast, how often do I really need to have my chimney swept? LOCAL

+

That's a great question, and something we hear a lot from homeowners in Currituck County. Here in Barco, the coastal climate can be a bit tougher on chimneys. The high humidity and salty air can sometimes accelerate the buildup of corrosive creosote, especially if you burn a lot of pine or unseasoned wood. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends an annual inspection for all chimneys, and we strongly agree, particularly for our area. For most folks who use their fireplace regularly during our damp winters, an annual cleaning is the safest bet to prevent chimney fires and ensure proper ventilation. If you only have a few fires a year, you might be able to stretch it, but an inspection is still key to catch any moisture damage or blockages from nesting animals. A standard sweeping and inspection in the Barco area typically runs between $175 and $300, which is a small price for peace of mind.

When is the best time of year to schedule a chimney sweep in Barco, considering our coastal North Carolina weather? LOCAL

+

That's a great question, and thinking ahead is smart here in Currituck County. While we can service your chimney year-round, the absolute best time to schedule your cleaning and inspection in Barco is during our off-season, typically from late spring through summer (April to August). Once that first chilly breeze comes off the Sound in September or October, our phones start ringing off the hook! Everyone wants their fireplace ready for that first surprise cold snap. Scheduling during the warmer months means you'll have much more flexibility in finding an appointment that works for you. It also ensures your chimney is clean, safe, and ready to go well before you need it, giving you peace of mind when that first nor'easter of the season decides to show up. Don't wait for the fall rush—book in the summer and relax!

Living here in Barco, we get a lot of humid, salty air and strong winds from nor'easters. Does this coastal weather affect how often I need my chimney inspected for safety? LOCAL

+

That's an excellent question, and yes, it absolutely does. While the National Fire Protection Association recommends an annual chimney inspection for everyone, it's especially critical here in Currituck County. Our humid, salt-laden air can accelerate the deterioration of your chimney's masonry and metal flashing, creating cracks and leaks that pose a safety risk. The strong winds from coastal storms can also damage or blow off your chimney cap, leaving the flue vulnerable to rain damage and nesting animals like birds or raccoons, which are common in our area. A blocked flue is a serious fire and carbon monoxide hazard. For peace of mind and to ensure your system is safe from these unique coastal challenges, an annual inspection by a certified professional is the best way to keep your family safe all winter.

Are there any specific North Carolina or Currituck County regulations I need to know about for a new chimney or wood stove installation in Barco? LOCAL

+

That's a great question, as staying compliant is key for safety and your home's value. In North Carolina, including here in Barco and Currituck County, all new chimney and wood stove installations must adhere to the North Carolina State Building Code. This code specifically adopts the standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 211, which is the national safety standard for chimneys, fireplaces, and vents. This standard covers critical safety aspects like proper clearances from combustible materials, the type of materials used, and the required height of your chimney above the roofline. While the state code is the main driver, our coastal environment in Barco adds another layer. The salty, humid air can accelerate corrosion, so we always recommend using high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel liners and caps. Before starting any major installation, it's always a good idea to confirm permit requirements with the Currituck County building inspections department to ensure a smooth and safe process.
